The Last of Us Season 1 Ep 8 is the eighth chapter of the first season of an American post-apocalyptic zombie horror TV series, based on the best-selling video game of the same name. Plot

Entitled “When We Are In Need”, The Last of Us Season 1 Ep 8 is probably the darkest chapter as it shines a ‘light’ on Ellie’s character development. With Joel in a deep sleep of recovery, Ellie has to fulfil the role of protagonist. She encounters Pastor David and James – from the nearby Silverlake community – who appears amiable but is not what he seems. Ellie manages to get hold of medicine to treat Joel but David and James take the deer she’d shot.

Now, it seems that the man Joel killed from two episodes ago, is from the Silverlake community and the latter are out for revenge. Ellie is captured but Joel manages to survive, tortures his attackers and sets out to rescue Ellie. However, of course, Ellie is able to ward off David, after disturbing discoveries concerning David and the Silverlake community.

Characters

In a key scene in The Last of Us Season 1 Ep 8, David describes Ellie as possessing a “violent heart” like himself, which subsequently gets proven right in the worse possible way. Her path of survival is only possible due to her ruthlessness and her willingness to use violent means to protect herself and Joel. Not a pretty picture, but how else is a teenager meant to survive in the post-apocalyptic environment?

Observations

The Last of Us Season 1 Ep 8 a dark and disturbing journey into Ellie’s psyche. Definitely the trauma she has suffered in her young life has turned her into a killer as cold-blooded as Joel. What was good about this episode was that the entire narrative was achieved in one go, no complaints about slowburn pacing here!
