Plot
Entitled “Endure and Survive”, The Last of Us Season 1 Ep 5 completes the storyline initiated last episode. Joel and Ellie team up with Kansas City’s most wanted, Henry and the hearing-impaired Sam. Ellie and Sam bond over a comic book while Henry confidently provides an escape plan out of the city. Meanwhile, Kathleen and gang continue their search for Henry. In the frenetic third act, Kathleen and gang catch up with our quartet but their capture is prevented by the infected horde previously trapped underground. However, a relatively good ending is denied us as Sam was infected in the attack, Henry is forced to kill him before taking his own life in despair!
Characters
Joel and Ellie share a traumatic experience which will presumably bring them closer in the time ahead. Ellie discovers that her blood – while immune to the infection – cannot save someone already infected, like Sam. We are given context to Kathleen’s character as it relates to her pursuit of Henry, and it all makes sense considering the circumstances – though it would have been helpful if this was alluded to in the previous episode. An examination of what trauma will do to the human psyche and the justification that ensues for inhuman behaviour.
Conclusion
The Last of Us Season 1 Ep 5 is probably the strongest episode thus far. The action-packed third act certainly worth the price of admission. Highly recommended!
