The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Ep 9 is the ninth instalment of the fifth season of a dystopian alternate reality drama TV series based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name. In this alternate history, the USA has been taken over by hardcore fundamental religious fanatics and renamed as Gilead. In Gilead, women have become the property of men once more as the nation is ruled by theocratic patriarchy.

Entitled “Allegiances”, The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Ep 9 moves the plots and characterisations as quickly as it can across its duration. Even as June celebrated the American plan to rescue her daughter (and other girls) from Gilead, we knew at the back of the mind, that this was a risky endeavour. True enough, the mission fails and all involved are killed. Commander Lawrence attempts to use this opportunity to reiterate his offer to June to return to Gilead with amnesty. June refuses, fully comprehending now that there can be no compromising with the evil that is Gilead.

Meanwhile, Serena Joy hatches yet another scheme to escape the clutches of the Wheelers together with her infant son, Noah. For Serena Joy, she cannot compromise her principles to become what the Wheelers want her to become viz. a handmaid. Once more, this is a repudiation of all that Gilead stands for. This is no more clearer at the end where at the memorial service of the slain American soldiers, June recites the US pledge of allegiance before the mourners are attacked by a mob of Canadian protesters.

As we inch closer to the season finale, The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Ep 9 balances the series on a knife’s edge. June’s position becomes increasingly untenable and compromise appears unacceptable for both her and Serena Joy. Where does the series go from this dead end?
