The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Ep 6 is the sixth instalment of the fifth season of a dystopian alternate reality drama TV series based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name. In this alternate history, the USA has been taken over by hardcore fundamental religious fanatics and renamed as Gilead. In Gilead, women have become the property of men once more as the nation is ruled by theocratic patriarchy.

Entitled “Together”, The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Ep 6 features a big twist that will change the status quo of the series, probably irretrievably. Jun and Luke were captured in the No Man’s Land in the last episode. Understanding the context of the story, there was simply no way that Jun would be returning to Gilead – that would mean her death. Instead, their captors answer to Commander Wheeler – Serena Joy’s host – and word gets back that Jun has been captured.
Speaking of Serena Joy, The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Ep 6 is beginning to realise the full ramifications of being a pregnant widow under Gilead. Her sole purpose now is to be a mother and to give birth to her son and the Wheeler’s mansion becomes a prison, whereby she is not allowed to leave till the birth. Effectively, Serena Joy has become a handmaid. She is chided by Mrs Wheeler when she suggests that she will not remarry and be a single mother. Not what Serena Joy signed up for!

Thus, when given the opportunity, Serena Joy asks to witness Jun’s execution by Ezra, Wheeler’s henchman. We suspected that this was for Serena Joy to escape the Wheeler prison and suddenly Jun becomes the means by which to effect her plan. And true enough, Serena Joy shoots Ezra instead of Jun, and they drive off… leaving a bewildered Jun to wonder what in the world is happening. Could Jun and Serena Joy become allies?
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Ep 6 is yet another powerful episode, very emotionally satisfying. The big twist was earned in the last two episodes with Serena Joy’s situation very much declining in her eyes. A brilliant solution to the dilemma presented in the last episode. What could possibly come next? Highly recommended.
