The Expanse S05E09 continues the latest season of the critically acclaimed scifi streaming TV space opera drama. Entitled “Winnipesaukee”, The Expanse S05E09 is the penultimate episode of Season 5 and storylines are being wrapped up ahead of the season finale.
As mentioned in our previous episode review, it appears that the fate of Naomi Nagata, James Holden (and the Rocinante), Alex Kamal and Bobbie Draper (on the Razorback) and Camina Drummer will be colliding with one another as Marco Inaros diabolical plan bears fruition. However, the main focus of The Expanse S05E09 was really on Amos Burton and Clarissa Mao, who are seeking a way off Earth.

Having enlisted the aid of his boyhood friend, Erich and his gang, Amos – together with Clarissa, head to a spot (in Winnipesaukee) that the latter is aware of a space shuttle that will get them to Lunar. Much of the episode is concerned with the efforts to get said space shuttle off the ground. Typically, tension is introduced with the appearance of a multitude of obstacles that will stretch the duo to breaking point in order to achieve their shared goal. Which makes the achievement sweeter for the audience, being invested in the fate of these characters.
Elsewhere, the Earth government situation is resolved in a less than satisfying manner. It seemed altogether too convenient for ex-U.N. secretary-general Chrisjen Avasarala to end up being in control once again. It’s almost as if the writers had run out of ideas in that respect and needed to bring back this particular fan favourite!
But of course, it is the fate of the Rocinante and its remaining crew that concerns us most and that is certainly coming to a head in the season finale. Why do we have a sinking feeling that Season 5 will have a rather dark ending. It’s difficult to see any other conclusion, unfortunately.
