The Expanse S05E05

The Expanse S05E05 signals the halfway mark in the latest season of this scifi space opera streaming TV drama. Entitled “Down and Out”, The Expanse S05E05 continues to explore the ramifications of Marcos Inaros’ asteroid attack on Earth on our key characters. Suffice to say, things are not going well at all.

The various sub-plots follow our protagonists (the crew of the Rocinante) as they are scattered across the solar system. Amos is stuck in an Earth prison trying to escape the fallen debris post-attack. Alex and Bobbie are in space still tracking the Martian traitors as they rendezvous with Marcos’ Free Navy. Jim is on Tycho trying to come to terms with the chaos caused by Inaros. Meanwhile, Naomi is in the worst case scenario, kidnapped by her son Felipe on board Inaros’ ship and fighting hard to change her situation.

There’s also a wild card in the mix. Camino Drummer and her faction have been invited to a meeting with Inaros to discuss a potential Belters collective moving forward in the new status quo. It does appear that Drummer will play a key role in turning the story around in the second half of season 5.

Definitely, The Expanse S05E05 is the strongest episode thus far and it feels like many of the plot strands will come together as we move closer to this 10-part season. Though so far, not much has been explored in terms of the ‘official’ responses from Earth and Martian governments, that must surely happen sooner or later.

The tension levels are off the chart at this midpoint of the season. “Down and Out” signifies that the main characters have hit rock bottom and viewers will be engaged by how our protagonists will figure out a way of this mess. Essential viewing for all scifi geeks!
