The Drop

The Drop is a 2014 American crime film directed by Michaël R. Roskam and distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures. It was written by Dennis Lehane, based on his 2009 short story “Animal Rescue”. It follows Bob Saginowski, a barman who becomes entangled in an investigation after the mafia-run bar where he works is robbed. It stars Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, James Gandolfini (in his final film role), and Matthias Schoenaerts. (Wikipedia)

The main strengths of this crime drama are two-fold. The performances are solid and the plot is well-constructed. Although, these plus points are almost undone by the snail-like pacing.

Prima facie, the film appears to be about former bartender Marv (the late Gandolfini is his last role in a feature) and his attempts to steal from his Chechen mafia overlords via the ‘drops’ that take place at the bar.

But in fact, the main character is Bob Saginowski (Hardy), a laconic simple-minded bartender who is much more than he seems. The story builds up slowly with Saginowski’s budding relationships with a dog and Nadia (Rapace) threatened by the looming menace of Eric Deeds (Matthias Schoenaerts).

But things do not quite turn out the way everybody expects and the twist in the tale is almost worth the effort arriving at the denouement. Writer Lehane was also behind Shutter Island and Mystic River, which also featured prominent twist endings. Whilst The Drop is not as engaging, the conclusion alone might just be worth the price of admission. Just.
