Premise
Entitled “Aftermath”, The Changeling Part 6 focuses entirely on Emma and fleshes out her story subsequent to her apparently killing baby Brian and injuring Apollo – hence the title. Essentially, Emma finds Cal and the Wise Ones on North Brother Island, where she pieces together clues to locate a special place, in order to find the real baby Brian.
Good
The Changeling Part 6 certainly helps the audience to appreciate everything that Emma had experience and provided the motivation for her actions and behaviour. We can finally see the trauma and courage demonstrated by Emma to destroy the changeling and do whatever is necessary to recover her baby Brian. The episode is like a dark fairy tale, as Emma encounters the Wise Ones as well as Wheels beneath New York City in the abandoned subway tunnels. The engagement with Emma is extremely high.
Bad
Now the problem is that all this was not revealed to the audience previously. Instead, we were provided with a time jump after Apollo is released from incarceration. This made the story very difficult to follow, and it was virtually impossible to empathise with Emma’s plight whatsoever. We would argue that this was a poor writing decision. Instead, the two storylines of Apollo and Emma should have run parallel in real time. That would have made the story more effective. What a wasted opportunity!
Conclusion
The Changeling Part 6 is a strong entry but the question now is whether the series will continue with its confusing non-linear narrative, and thereby weakening the overall story. Hopefully not!
