Premise
Entitled “Battle of the Island”, The Changeling Part 8 (and season 1 finale, it seems) finds the character Kinder Garten unleashing his unbridled fury across the island sending Cal, Apollo and others into the sea, seeking escape and refuge.
Bad
After two episodes of flashbacks, the final episode turns out to be a season finale instead, where nothing much really happens to resolve the key quests of the story. The “battle” in the title isn’t really that at all, all we see are trees shaking and explosions. That’s it! There is a tense scene where Cal, Apollo and gang make their way down a cliff but even that tension is somewhat weak. The story is not advanced whatsoever! By the end of this season finale, Apollo and Emma seek to rescue baby Brian from Kinder Garten – who it seems, is a multitude – presumably in the second season. But seriously folks, why would anyone be interested in a second season? This ponderous narrative had little engagement to begin with and none of the questions were answered satisfactorily. Who was that witch Emma met in Brazil? And who is the “she” that Kinder Garten mentions?
Good
Honestly, there are not many positive takeaways from this season 1 finale. Emma does not even appear in the final two entries. Is the mystery box still a viable trope?
Conclusion
The Changeling Part 8 ended this first season on a limp note. If not for the fact, that AppleTV+ is known for renewing even under-performing series, we fully expect The Changeling to return with a second 3, much like Invasion and Foundation. Hmmm.
