Entitled “The Wise Ones”, The Changeling Part 4 begins Apollo’s quest to find his wife Emma. In this endeavour, he is aided by William Wheeler, who has an ulterior motive in assisting Apollo. This chapter marks a solid turn for the series into the realm of fantasy as what subsequent happens would not be possible in the real world.
First all, in The Changeling Part 4, Apollo discovers the mysterious island, William insists is the location of Emma’s whereabouts. Instead, Apollo finds the Wise Ones, previously mentioned in earlier chapters, and in particular Cal (or Callisto), the leader of the Wise Ones, who handles Apollo ultra-violently and upon discovering William even threatens to kill him?!? What’s going on, who are these women who can pass death sentences on men so cavalierly? Something is not quite right.
William is an enigma and certainly is part of this mystery box. Later in the chapter, he reveals that his wife and daughter were taken by the Wise Ones, and claims that his wife had killed one of his daughters, similar to what Emma had done with baby Brian. Cal seems to indicate to Apollo that things are not as they seem, that perhaps Brian was not really a baby, that his life with Emma was merely an illusion. Not much else is revealed, which is a little frustrating, but of course, that is the characteristic of a mystery box i.e. questions upon questions.
In the final analysis, The Changeling Part 4 is still intriguing enough but we need answers very very soon. Recommended.
