The Bad Batch S01E02 is the second episode of an animated scifi space opera action-adventure streaming TV series set in the Star Wars universe. Basically a spin-off of the final season of The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch features five ‘deviant’ clone troopers who come together like The Dirty Dozen (click on the link if you are too young to get the reference!) to take on missions that ordinary clone troopers are not equipped to handle.
Entitled “Cut and Run”, The Bad Batch S01E02 basically serves two narrative purposes. One, to cement Omega – the mysterious Kamino child clone – and her place with The Bad Batch. And two, to establish the new status quo within the Galactic Empire as it transits out of the Republic. These twin purposes are achieved in a matter of factly manner without being too clever or artistically driven.
That’s a polite way of saying that The Bad Batch S01E02 is a satisfactory functionary episode but nothing much more than that. Considering that it was only about half an hour long – which is probably par for the course in the series – one should not expect too much to be given away at this early stage.
Story-wise, this batch finds our protagonists linking up with Cut Lawquane, a rogue clone last seen in The Clone Wars. Simply put, Hunter and gang end up on Saleucami seeking aid and comfort from Cut and his wife Suu, but in the end are required to help the couple to escape the clutches of the Empire as a the regime establish their new world order on the former Republic.
Nothing too dramatic takes place, to be fair, except the question of Hunter’s relationship with Omega, as the latter begins to develop his paternal instincts. It’s a simple tale but necessary to move forward, when one considers the validity of Omega’s place with The Bad Batch.
