In my recent opinion piece on music appreciation, I opined that music has become less time sensitive in the new media age. So I am starting a new music feature to highlight recommended new (mainly) pop-rock albums on a post-monthly basis. So here it is – Recommended Albums (September 2020). Check them out!(more…)

Haven’t done this for quite a while but it’s time to get stuck into new music that is coming out this year. First up, January!
NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS – CHASING YESTERDAY
For some reason, this latest album from the ex-Oasis man sounds uncannily like Pink Floyd! Unfortunately, it’s the post-Roger Waters version – probably the poorest incarnation of the legendary band – with several guitar passages echoing the work of Floyd’s David Gilmour. It’s still more listenable when compared to most new modern rock though and that’s an inditement.
OF MONTREAL – AUREATE GLOOM
Speaking of Pink Floyd, psych-pop veterans Of Montreal returns with a smashing new album demonstrating that the influence of Floyd founder Syd Barrett continues to resonate strongly with the band. Fans of chronic psychedelia need to have some Aureate Gloom in their lives!

What else was worth checking out in February? Here goes…
BLACKBERRY SMOKE – HOLDING ALL THE ROSES
An obvious choice. A real band playing real music. In this case, Southern Rock, country-folk and old time rock n roll make it simple. Recommended.
It’s a new month – the best month of the year! So what’s new out there?
BUTCH WALKER – AFRAID OF GHOSTS
When pop-rockers venture into the country-folk space, most of time if their heart is in the right place, it can be pretty magical. Butch Walker proves this at least, with his new solo album. Gorgeous country-folk which recalls Neil Young and name checks Chrissie Hynde. Recommended.
It’s the first new releases of the year so let’s take a (very) quick look at what’s out there on 6th January, shall we?
STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB – NOUN
Not pop-punk thankfully but instead faithful rendition of old school US punk i.e. Ramones, Stooges, New York Dolls etc. Not very original but one can appreciate the intention.
Alright. Here’s the deal – every week I randomly pick FIVE new releases listed at Spotify and tell you what I think (YAY or NAY?!), very spontaneously! No holds barred – fasten your seatbelts! Let me know what you think of the music in the comments…
MAGIC! – Don’t Kill the Magic
This sounds like these guys saw all the hype surrounding Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” (as featured on the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer) and a lightbulb appeared over their collective heads. But seriously folks, this is really commercial pop-rock, which heavy emphasis on reggae party vibes. A bit too smooth of my tastes though. NAY!
