WandaVision Episode 3 continues the Disney+ streaming superhero TV drama miniseries. As mentioned in our previous review, WandaVision is the first time Marvel Studios has spun off the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters into a TV series. Anyone familiar with the MCU – isn’t that everyone? – will be aware of its interconnectivity and perhaps that’s where WandaVision (so far) has held back in favour of a very fanciful storytelling artifice.
WandaVision is the debut Marvel Studios superhero TV miniseries drama streaming on the Disney+ platform. Of course, we have had Marvel TV series like Daredevil, Jessica Jones etc on Netflix, Agents of SHIELD on ABC and so on. However, this time around, WandaVision is effectively spinning off the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters of Wanda Maximoff and Vision into a TV miniseries. Thus far, Disney+ has released the first two episodes of the miniseries and its fair to say that WandaVision is quite different from what MCU fans may be used to in the hit movies.
The New Mutants is a superhero horror movie directed by Josh Boone. The final movie in the Fox X-Men franchise series, The New Mutants is loosely based on the Marvel comic book series of the same name, in particular the Demon Bear Saga that ran from #18 – #20, in the 80s.
Taking a macro view, Avengers : Endgame is a thrilling and heartfelt celebration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and represents the end of the Infinity Saga, which began with Iron Man (2008).
Venom is a 2018 American superhero film drama based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel and Tencent Pictures. If you like your superheroes light and you are not too concerned about well-developed plots and characterisations, then this is the movie for you!
MAKE MINE MARVEL is an opinion piece. A decade ago, Marvel Studios released its maiden production – Iron Man – and the world of movies have never been the same.
Deadpool 2 is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Deadpool. Distributed by 20th Century Fox, it is the sequel to Deadpool (2016) and the eleventh installment overall in the X-Men film series. (Wikipedia)
Avengers: Infinity War is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Avengers. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sequel to The Avengers (2012) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), and the 19th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). (Wikipedia)
Black Panther is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 18th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Ryan Coogler, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole, and it stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa / Black Panther. (Wikipedia)
Iron Man marks Marvel’s first self-developed and self-financed film (in a ten-film deal with Paramount) and the way that this Jon Favreau-directed, Robert Downey-starred blockbuster translates the comic book so successfully onto the big screen augers well for the other Marvel films to come.
Director Taika Waititi attempts to graft the tone of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies onto Thor : Ragnarok but it’s all painfully superficial.
The reason why Fox’s The Gifted is resonating with us while CW’s slate of DC superhero shows continue to bore and annoy is simple – the stakes seem real and urgent for the mutant characters.
It’s time to stop being surprised about how good The Gifted is! Episode 3 “eXodus” continued the standard of excellence thus far experienced with this well-written mutant series.
With The Gifted, there are now three Marvel-based TV series – the other two being Agents of SHIELD and Legion – that have surpassed the entire slate of CW DC Comics-based series.
Expectations were predictably low for The Gifted, the latest Fox mutant TV series. Based on the synopsis, it appeared similar to Heroes and the first season of Agents of SHIELD. Thankfully, it exceeded our expectations!
Just like the Marvel Studios films, Marvel Television’s web TV series for Netflix introduced characters through solo series before leading into the Defenders team series, sometime in mid-2017. Iron Fist is the last of the solo series before the Avengers-like team up happens.
Considering that 2016 had the most superhero movies to date (SIX!) – a valid concern would be creeping fatigue – would the sheer volume of such movies turn people against superhero movies in general?
Please note that this Captain America : Civil War analysis contains spoilers!
If the critics are to be believed, Captan America: Civil War is the best superhero movie ever made and Batman V Superman is the worst. But what is really at issue here? One is a Marvel movie and the other isn’t. It’s really as simple as that. Simply put, every criticism of BVS can also be validly levelled at Civil War but the latter gets a free pass, every single time. This bias is not unusual for Marvel fans – its comic fans were famously labelled as ‘Marvel Zombies’ back in the 80s for supporting Marvel no matter how awful the stories and characters were.
