THE GATHERING WITH THE FLAMING LIPS X JAGWAR MA: POWER OF POP INTERVIEW WITH GABRIEL WINTERFIELDTHE GATHERING WITH THE FLAMING LIPS X JAGWAR MA: POWER OF POP INTERVIEW WITH GABRIEL WINTERFIELD
A fabulous double bill awaits rock fans when Jagwar Ma joins The Flaming Lips on 1st December at The Coliseum. So here’s an email interview we did with the former’s Gabriel Winterfield and the results were good fun, as you will soon discover.
PoP: Last time out, you had to cancel a performance at Laneway Singapore – could you share with us what happened?
Gabriel: I tore a ligament in my knee, and was unable to perform or travel. Very sad. I’ve been waiting to get another chance to play Singapore ever since.
THE FLAMING LIPS RETURN TO SINGAPORE ON DECEMBER 1ST!THE FLAMING LIPS RETURN TO SINGAPORE ON DECEMBER 1ST!
The Flaming Lips are coming back to Singapore! Four years ago, the Lips thrilled us with a wildly psychedelic show but omitted to play a single track from my favourite Lips album – The Soft Bulletin. Well, hopefully, the band can remedy this in December at The Coliseum! Tickets go on sale this Monday (20th Oct) 10am at http://tickets.eventclique.com/thegathering.

I attended The Gathering with Travis last Friday (1st August) and got to interview Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop backstage. You can read the article over at TODAY online. It was amazing to meet Fran and Andy – really down to earth, charming blokes who care deeply about the music and the fans. A rarity! They made me feel so much at home that I plucked up the nerve to pass them my solo album, Emo FASCISM!
I must take this opportunity to mention Take Two who opened for Travis with much aplomb. Oozing confidence, Take Two put up a dynamic performance with their trademark infectious tunes taking centre stage. One to keep a close eye watch on. In addition, I must thank Sophia Ho, Timothy Ho (Forefront Asia) and Nikki Mahmood-Chee (Hostess Asia) for their wonderful hospitality.
Now, if you want to listen to an audio recording of my interview with Travis, like our Facebook page www.facebook.com/powerofpop and then send an email to info AT powerofpop DOT com for the secret DL link.

Nineties alt-rock fans will be thrilled by the news that Scottish band Travis return to Singapore on 1st August at the Star Performing Arts Centre. The band released their comeback album – Where You Stand – last year after a five year hiatus and this concert promises to be a highlight of 2014!
Tickets are priced from SGD58 (excludes booking fee) and are available via SISTIC.
Listen to our playlist of a possible Travis setlist. Enjoy…
Nothing quite compares to an intimate club show where one is able to get up close to the artist. In the past, such gigs were fairly scarce in Singapore as promoters tended to favor artists who could draw upwards of a thousand fans. But thankfully of late, these kinds of gigs are becoming more and more common in the live music scene here with recent examples being And So I Watch You From Afar at Zouk, Dirty Beaches at Pink Noize, Deafheaven at Beep Studios and Music Matters Live at various Clarke Quay outlets.
Spanish artist Russian Red (born Lourdes Hernandez) has played on our shores twice before in close quartered environments and it was pretty much the same on her third visit, this time at TAB. Thus, it was easy to make out Hernandez’s fine outfit of the night – a black frilly dress, shiny golden heels and bangs tied up in a bun – which when combined with a stylish Gretsch electric guitar (whom Hernandez referred to as ‘Gretchen’), provided a somewhat incongruous image of the dainty female rocker.
THE GATHERING WITH RUSSIAN RED – LIVE IN SINGAPORE [NEWS]THE GATHERING WITH RUSSIAN RED – LIVE IN SINGAPORE [NEWS]
Seems the number three comes heavily into play for Russian Red (aka Spanish singer-songwriter Lourdes Hernández) as she performs in Singapore for the third time, as the third act in Forefront Asia’s The Gathering series to support her third album, Agent Cooper.
Russian Red will be performing at The Ground Theatre @ *Scape on June 13, 2014. Tickets are available via Event Clique and are priced at SGD 50. Tickets will also be available at the door but priced at SGD 75.

When I told DARKSIDE (Nicolas Jaar & Dave Harrington) over the phone that I thought new album Psychic sounded like traditional rock, they were rather amused (and bemused, I suspect). And whilst, it is true that their improvisational performance style was somewhat experimental, it was not difficult to hear the echoes of Pink Floyd (Harrington did a fair Gilmour impression) and other psychedelic space-rock acolytes in the duo’s well-received set at the Ground Theatre *SCAPE on Sunday, 6th April.
After the well-received inaugural The Gathering with Empire of the Sun, Forefront Asia has announced that the second edition will bring to our shores musical duo, DARKSIDE on Sunday, 6th April at *SCAPE (The Ground Theatre).
DARKSIDE is the collaboration of electronic musician Nicolas Jaar, and Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington. The duo is known for the intense pulsing baseline beats and hollowed synthesizer accompaniments, coupled with supplementary notes contributed by instruments ranging from a guitar to Harrington’s falsetto.
Tickets priced at SGD65, are now available at Event Clique.

ALIVE & KICKING – THE GATHERING WITH EMPIRE OF THE SUN / MONSTER CATALIVE & KICKING – THE GATHERING WITH EMPIRE OF THE SUN / MONSTER CAT
Empire of the Sun‘s frontman Luke Steele promised an exciting adventure for his band’s performance for the opening concert in The Gathering series. And from a purely visual perspective, EOTS did not let down the sizable audience on Friday, 21st February gathered outdoor at the Fort Canning Park. An amazing light show and colourfully attired dancing girls guaranteed a feast for the eyes during their hour plus set.
Before that, local champions MONSTER CAT thrilled the early birds with a showcase of songs from new album – The Violet Hour – notably first single “Take Me to Love”. The band was somewhat squeezed to the side of the stage (due to EOTS elaborate setup) and thus, the band seemed a little awkward but that didn’t stop the boys from giving their all and doing their ambitious new numbers justice.
Forefront Asia is launching a new live music series, The Gathering, with their first act, Empire of the Sun. Scheduled to perform on February 21, 2014, at Fort Canning Green, this will be the award-winning Australian electronic music act’s first-ever headline show in Singapore.
Limited early bird tickets, priced at SGD85, are now available at Event Clique (https://tickets.eventclique.com/thegathering)
