Entitled “Church and State”, Succession Season 4 Ep 9 pauses the wheeling, dealing and the scheming behind the scenes of the Waystar acquisition by GoJo. Well, only slightly. You see, it’s the occasion of Logan Roy’s funeral as his family and friends lay him to rest. But of course, Logan’s legacy is laid bare for all to see – from feuding family members to former wives and mistresses, not least his dysfunctional offspring. Bottom line is always money, and power, of course, nothing else matters as far as the Roys are concerned.
Succession Season 4 Ep 9 maintains that the war of succession is firmly in two camps viz. the Roy brothers Kendall and Roman on one side with sister Shiv and prospective new owner Mattson on the other. Now, it is significant to include Mattson in this equation as if the Waystar acquisition goes through, it may be said that Mattson becomes the true successor to Logan Roy’s legacy. However, with Mencken becoming presumptive president, and with these two sides desperately trying to curry favour, any outcome is possible. Nothing is as cut and dried as it appears.
And so, this magnificent TV series comes to an end with its final episode – will there be a sting in the tail that will upset all the carts? Or will, as it appears, Kendall Roy emerge to grasp the golden ring, the one he has been coveting since the first episode? Especially when Roman fucked up the eulogy very publicly? We shall find out!
