Entitled “Tailgate Party”, Succession Season 4 Ep 7 utilises the setting of a Presidential eve party to highlight the deeply dysfunctional characters looking for an edge, an advantage in furtherance of their personal ambition. At the centre of these machinations is Shiv – playing the role of a scorpion queen – siding with Mattson against her own family in a bid to be named the new CEO in the post-acquisition reality.
Succession Season 4 Ep 7 also demonstrates that despite their bravado, co-CEOs Kendall and Roman do not seem to have the clout to shut down the deal with Mattson. Their over-reach only a stark reminder that they are not in the same league as their late father, when it comes to the wheeling and dealing. In an unexpected twist, we discover that Mattson and GoJo may not be in a superior bargaining position as once assumed. This only leaves Shiv with betting on the wrong horse. The closing arguments between her and Tom emphasise the disturbing issues these characters have as decent human beings – which they are not!
Even more surprising is the clarity that Kendall seems to possess to capitalise on the new information regarding GoJo as he concocts a plan with Frank for Waystar to acquire GoJo instead! Curiouser and curiouser. Again, it’s amazing how engaging this episode was purely based on dialogue and characterisation. Brilliant!
