S P O I L E R S
For the uninitiated, Succession is a drama series that revolves around the Roy family, the dysfunctional and wealthy owners of Waystar Royco, a global media and hospitality empire. The first season of the show focuses on the power struggle within the family, as patriarch Logan Roy, the CEO of the company, considers stepping down and passing on the reins to one of his children. The Roy children – Kendall, Shiv, Roman, and Connor – all have their own ambitions and flaws, and each vies for their father’s favor.
Throughout the second season, the Roy family faces new challenges and threats as they fight to maintain their control over Waystar Royco. Kendall’s drug addiction spirals out of control, and he attempts to overthrow his father by joining forces with other board members. Shiv contemplates leaving the family business to work for a progressive politician, while Roman struggles with his own insecurities and identity.
In the third season, tensions continues to mount as the Roy family faces a new crisis that threatens to tear them apart. As they grapple with the aftermath of a major scandal and prepare for a high-stakes battle for control of the company, the Roys must confront their own demons and make difficult choices to protect their legacy and secure their place in the world. Along the way, they must navigate shifting alliances, backstabbing, and betrayal, as the stakes become higher than ever before.
Succession Season 4 Ep 1 finds the Roy family spilt between Logan and three of his children (viz. Kendall, Roman and Shiv) as they compete over the acquisition of a legacy media giant. Most of the episode is simply a series of meetings and discussions but the engagement is maintained due to the dynamics of the relationships and the complexity of the individual characters. No mean feat! Along the way, Logan once more demonstrates his utter alienation from everybody as his wealth and achievements feed his out-of-control narcissism.
Succession Season 4 Ep 1 is the perfect re-introduction to this dysfunctional family and their petty, inhumane behaviours. A brilliant satire on the real world of power, corruption and lies. It appears that this critically acclaimed series will be going out with a bang! Highly recommended!
