Strange New Worlds Season 3 Ep 7

Strange New Worlds Season 2 Ep 7 is the seventh instalment of the second season of an American scifi space opera television drama created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet for the streaming service Paramount+. A spin-off of the Discovery series, Strange New Worlds features the USS Enterprise captained by Christopher Pike and set a decade before the events in the original Star Trek TV series.

Entitled “Those Old Scientists”, Strange New Worlds Season 2 Ep 7 is an interesting entry as it involves a crossover with the animated Trek series, Lower Decks! Thus, we are treated to Lower Decks characters Ensigns Mariner and Boimler, appearing in live action, with Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid filling in the roles accordingly. In addition, at the end of the episode, we get to see animated versions of the Enterprise crew as well. Quite a unique concept, it must be said.

However, in order for this crossover to happen, this instalment is yet another time travelling episode and considering that last time out – episode 3 – involved time travel as well, this seems a little too much overall. That said, this concern did not stop this episode from being thoroughly enjoyable, even if you are not familiar with the Lower Decks series. The time travel trope – a common Trek one – forces characters to reflect on themselves, especially when future characters hold them in high esteem for achievements not yet even imagined.

In the final analysis, though somewhat contrived, Strange New Worlds Season 2 Ep 7 is a fun ride with the interactions between the Lower Decks characters and Enterprise crew, highlighting the significant difference in tone. Highly recommended!
