Entitled “Charades”, Strange New Worlds Season 2 Ep 5 is yet another strong episode that will resonate both with Trekkers and casual viewers. The premise of the episode is simple enough – due to a shuttle accident, Spock has been transformed by inter-dimensional alien beings into fully human! If that isn’t bad enough, he has to participate in a Vulcan engagement ritual, to be judged by his fiancé’s mother!
One might quibble that this episode is a bit of a one-trick pony as we get to see what a fully human Spock would look like – loads of comedy of course – and how his interactions with his crew mates would change radically. But it’s a bit more than that, as the incident also facilitates an exploration of Spock’s complicated relationship with Nurse Chapel.
The other significant factor that works with this episode is the return of Spock’s mother, Amanda Grayson, last seen in the Discovery series. A deepening of the understanding between mother and son is a relatable course and hugely satisfying as well for the viewer. Like we said, there is much for diehards and noobs alike to enjoy about this entertaining and meaningful episode.
Strange New Worlds Season 2 Ep 5 continues to demonstrate that this Star Trek series is truly hitting its stride in its second season. Highly recommended!
