Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 1 is the first instalment of an American scifi space opera television drama created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet for the streaming service Paramount+. A spin-off of the Discovery series, Strange New Worlds features the USS Enterprise captained by Christopher Pike and set a decade before the events in the original Star Trek TV series. Arguably, Discovery’s second season – which introduced Anson Mount’s version of Pike – has been the best so far, so it’s no surprise that this series is now a reality.

The premise of Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 1 could not be more familiar to Trekkers viz. Pike – since the events of Discovery season 2 – has been reluctant to return to active duty since he witnessed his own future fate. However, the disappearance of his first officer on a first contact secret mission with another ship, brings Pike and the Enterprise back into action to deal with the emergency.

Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 1 has Pike and the Enterprise crew grapple with the complications of what would be known as the Prime Directive i.e. this prohibits Starfleet members from interfering with the natural development of alien civilizations. However, in this episode, Pike has no choice but to interfere since the concluding events of Discovery season 2, brought about the technological advancement in the subject planet, Kiley 279.
The story line wraps up within this first episode, which hearkens back to the classic Trek series – a direction which no doubt be welcomed by Trekkers upset with Discovery’s break from tradition. Certainly, this debut episode is not ground-breaking but good enough setup in plot and characterisations for an interesting season ahead. Hit it!
