STRANGE NEW WORLDS SEASON 1 EPISODE 9 (ANALYSIS)

Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 9 is the ninth instalment of an American scifi space opera television drama created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet for the streaming service Paramount+. A spin-off of the Discovery series, Strange New Worlds features the USS Enterprise captained by Christopher Pike and set a decade before the events in the original Star Trek TV series. Arguably, Discovery’s second season – which introduced Anson Mount’s version of Pike – has been the best so far, so it’s no surprise that this series is now a reality.

Entitled “All Those Who Wander”, Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 9 marks the second time this season that the Enterprise have encountered the Gorn. This time, we get to actually see Gorn hatchlings in action as an away mission goes horribly wrong. Captain Pike leads this away team to follow up on a distress call, even as the rest of Enterprise is called away on a different albeit equally important mission.

This episode is also significant as it depicts the untimely death of one of the Enterprise crew and another key crew member taking a leave of absence. That said, there is a confirmed addition to the crew in the form of Ensign Uhura. Although there have been many light-hearted moments in previous episodes, this adventure makes no bones about the fact that the missions can be very dangerous.

Now, let’s talk about the Gorn. This alien species first appeared in The Original Series in a memorable episode where Captain Kirk had an unintentionally funny fight scene with a lumbering lizard-like Gorn warrior. The Gorn hatchlings are no laughing here though. They may retain their reptilian form but their similarities with the xenomorph of the Alien franchise make them formidable predators.

Strange New Worlds Season 1 Episode 9 is the penultimate episode in this well-received, entertaining first season and we look forward to a finale with the promise of more seasons to come, for sure. Highly recommended!
