Entitled “The Next Generation”, Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 1 once again brings our hero out of retirement this time to respond to a distress call from former Enterprise colleague and ex-lover Doctor Beverley Crusher (Gates McFadden). Doc Crusher specifically instructs Picard not to go to Starfleet for assistance and to trust no one. So, Picard brings his problem to Captain Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and together they plan to trick Captain Shaw, who heads USS Titan, into flying the duo to coordinates given by Doc Crusher.
Shaw denies Picard’s request but conveniently enough, Shaw’s first officer happens to be Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) now known by her real name, Annika Hansen. Well, Commander Hansen orders Titan to fly over to Doc Crusher’s location while Shaw is asleep (?!) and the deceitful duo make their way to Doc Crusher’s ship. There they find her in cryogenic sleep and are accosted by her son, not Wesley but Jack, previously undisclosed. Before anything else can occur, Doc Crusher’s ship is attacked by a gigantic unknown alien ship.
Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Ep 1 is unremarkable, plot-wise, but is chock full of the obligatory Easter eggs nostalgic fan-service that floods every franchise content nowadays. Sure, it’s always good to see beloved characters return – even if they are now older versions – as long as there’s an engaging story beneath that fan-service flood. Too early to say where this third (and final) season will stand.
