PICARD SEASON 2 EPISODE 1 (REVIEW)

Star Trek Picard S02E01 Review

Picard Season 2 Episode 1 is the first episode of the 2nd season of an American television series created by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer, and Alex Kurtzman for the streaming service Paramount+. The series is a spin-off of Star Trek: The Next Generation (STTNG) with the titular character Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) as its central focal point.

The first season saw the series reaching back into the STTNG universe to bring Picard out of retirement by drawing him into a new adventure when he is visited by the apparent daughter of Data, one of several new synthetic beings or “synths”. Picard fights for their right to exist and gives his life to save them in the first season finale. His consciousness is then transferred into a synthetic body.

Entitled “The Star Gazer”, Picard Season 2 Episode 1 picks up a year and an half after the events at the end of the 1st season. The new status quo finds Picard back in retirement at his family vineyard while Musiker and Rios have rejoined Starfleet and Elnor has been enlisted into Starfleet Academy. Soji and Dr. Jurati are working together to forward the cause of synths and Seven of Nine continues to lead the vigilante group the Fenris Rangers, with command now of Rios’ former space craft. Everything hunky dory by all accounts. But of course, this new normal does not last.

The main players are all drawn into Rios new command – USS Stargazer (Picard’s first ship command) as Starfleet seemingly is confronted once more by the Borg. But of course, things are not quite as they seem and instead the end of the episode sets up what is to come in this 2nd season with echoes of the STTNG pilot episode firmly ringing in our ears, so to speak. Exciting and more action-oriented than the ponderous season 4 of Discovery, Star Trek: Picard promises to be worth the watch! Recommended!!

Now streaming on Paramount+.
