Star Trek Discovery S04E03 is the third episode of the fourth season of the scifi TV drama series streaming on Paramount+. The series had a mixed reception due to its perceived retconning of Star Trek canon, being set 10 years before the events in the original Star Trek TV series and by introducing Michael Burnham (as the sister of the iconic character, Mr. Spock). In season 3, the series transported the ship and its crew almost a century into the future, thereby (cleverly) avoiding any issue with Star Trek canon once and for all.

Entitled “Choose To Live”, Star Trek Discovery S04E03 is perhaps the best episode in season 4 so far. Its title is an allusion to the Qowat Milat, an order of Roman warrior nuns introduced in Star Trek: Picard and which numbers Michael’s mother Gabrielle in its number (as seen in the previous season). Essentially, the main plot involves robberies of dilithium committed by Qowat Milat on Starfleet ships. Michael and Tilly are tasked to investigate these robberies together with Gabrielle.
READ OUR REVIEWS OF STAR TREK DISCOVERY.
After the somewhat aimless direction of the first two episodes, at least in Star Trek Discovery S04E03, there was a tangible quest to drive the narrative forward. The two other sub-plots involving the continuing investigations of Stamets and Book into the Anomaly and Grey’s merging with a synthetic being with the aid of Adira were more emotional in content, without particularly moving the story forward. But the heartfelt payoffs in the character development was worth the effort.

The Qowat Milat plot is self-contained and resolved within Star Trek Discovery S04E03 while the over-arching Anomaly storyline appears to be the one that will occupied the Discovery over this fourth season. Presumably, the consequences of this resolution will be address later in the season. Better!
