Entitled “The Lie is the Truth”, Special Ops: Lioness Part 6 has a couple of moving parts but brings us no further with respect to what exactly the series is supposed to be about? A commentary of CIA operations within the USA itself? The conflict between duty and family? The danger of an undercover asset becoming emotionally attached to his or her mark? Maybe all of these concepts are relevant to this series. Unfortunately, that results in a royal mess of a narrative, with the audience not knowing who exactly to connect with, to root for?
Perhaps the most intriguing segment of Special Ops: Lioness Part 6 involves Joe (and her CIA superiors) having a tense meeting with the Secretary of State Edwin Mullins (played by Morgan Freeman) lying through their teeth that the CIA had anything to do with the operations seen in the previous episode. In addition, a revealing info nugget is provided that the endgame regarding Cruz’s undercover operation would be a drone attack on Aaliyah’s wedding to take out her father without concern for collateral damage. The ends justify the means, which is complicated by the fact that Cruz bonds with Aaliyah a bit too effectively! Inevitably, we might add!!
In the final analysis, the promise of this contemporary spy thriller is lost when its narrative focus is diluted with too much filler. Which begs the question – ‘where’s the beef?’ Sigh.
