Special Ops: Lioness Part 5 follows on from the previous narrative, which was the most engaging so far in this series, by focusing mainly on Joe’s perspective. However, whatever tension and conflict was built up, especially in relation to the jeopardy Joe faced at her workplace is immediately dissipated when her task force takes down a potentially deadly terrorists with barely an inconvenience. There is an attempt to interlace this with family drama, as her daughter lays broken in the hospital but her complicated operation removes an unwanted pregnancy so all’s well that ends well? Perhaps Joe’s marriage will end up being a casualty of her work commitments and that would be logical.
Special Ops: Lioness Part 5 highlights certain hard truths when it comes to the character of Joe. Zoe Saldana of course is hot enough to be mistaken for a supermodel but does that mean we can accept her Joe character as the bad-ass CIA operative that she is, in this series? It rides a fine line between fact and fiction and sure, Saldana is good enough to make any engaged viewer forget about these hard truths but only just.
That’s the main problem with this series – it’s not sure what it wants to be. Serious portrayal of the war on terror in modern times or a flight of fantasy involving impossibly hot female CIA operatives? Note that all the male characters are nothing to look at, whatsoever! The jury’s still out…
