Slow Horses Season 2 Ep 1 – 2 brings us back to Slough House, back to Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldham) and his team of exiled agents. A second season of this excellent series was a pleasant surprise and the first two episodes certainly live up to the high bar set by the first, for sure. This time, Lamb and co investigate UK-based Russian sleeper agents known as “cicadas”, generally regarded as a Soviet hoax by the intelligence communities.
The prime mystery of this new season is set off by the death of a former MI5 operative, Dickie Bough. Lamb discovers that the deceased left a note on his mobile phone with one word – “cicada” and Lamb assigns his various agents (including new additions Marcus and Shirley) to dig up more about who killed Bough.
In the meantime, Spider from MI5 (proper) engages Min and Louisa to provide security for a secret meeting between MI5 and a Russian dissident, which will probably connect the two assignments currently operated by Slough House. There is quite a bit of development of the relationship between the couple, which is now quite intimate. Light entertainment, but thankfully not too much.
Slow Horses Season 2 Ep 1 – 2 demonstrates once more why this series is a notch above much of the original fare provided by Disney+ and Amazon Prime these days. Intriguing and logical plot lines, engaging characterisations and none of that woke nonsense. Highly recommended!
