Entitled “Follies”, Slow Horses Episode 6 finds Jackson Lamb and Diana Taverner working together (sort of) to rescue the Muslim student kidnapped by the Sons of Albion, a white supremacist group. The episode highlights how unconventional the Slow Horses of Slough House are in their solving of the case and the ultimate rescue. It’s quite straightforward and reveals the human foibles of the kidnappers themselves and the somewhat ingenuity of the kidnapped, bringing the series out of your typical spy thriller.

In fact, that is what has made Slow Horses so enjoyable – the comedic element. The sheer bizarre nature of the espionage trade provides great opportunity for humour. Set in the context of the series – a motley crew of spy failures – whose leader tries his best to ensure nothing is done whatsoever, it’s hard not to find the comedy in this. Add to this context the quirky characters – like computer hacker Roddy Ho and pedigreed spy wannabe River Cartwright, not to mention the weird chemistry between Min and Louisa – the engagement comes naturally.
By the end of Slow Horses Episode 6, there is a fair bit of prolonged resolution which presumably will come in handy in season 2 (!) as Lamb and Taverner maintain their tense status quo between each other. A nugget is revealed at the very end of a secret kept by both Lamb and retired spy David Cartwright (River’s Grandfather) that may affect certain plotlines in the second season. We shall see. In the meantime, enjoy this excellent first season!
