Slow Horses Episode 5 Analysis

Slow Horses Episode 5 is the fifth instalment of a spy thriller television series based on the novel of the same name by Mick Herron. The 6-episode season is streaming on Apple TV+. The series follows a team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 due to their career-ending mistakes.

Entitled “Fiasco”, Slow Horses Episode 5 spends most of its runtime with MI5 trying to capture the ‘slow horses’ of Slough House as Diana Tarvener attempts to place the blame for her failed false flag operation on the former. As we soon discover, despite their less than stellar track record, the slow horses are able to thwart Tarvener’s diabolical schemes with cunning and daring.

Lamb and gang manage to get hold of evidence that incriminates Tarvener in this sordid affair and that changes the complexion of the series heading into the final episode. The manner in which Tarvener capitulates is a little hard to accept but with the final episode upon us, Lamb’s remark about the MI5 spending more time trying to catch and incriminate the slow horse rather than rescuing the kidnapped Muslim student speaks volumes of misplaced priorities.

As far as the student in question in concerned, the remaining Sons of Albion are in disarray – bickering amongst themselves with the psychotic murderous Curly continuing to be the wild card in this entire dangerous situation. The kidnappers and victim strike up a bizarre bargain in order to resolve the situation amicably but Curly’s instability threatens to derail any hopes of a peaceful solution to the crisis.

By the end of Slow Horses Episode 5, it appears that Lamb and Tarvener have decided to work together – whether that is realistic or not is questionable but certainly it seems the most logical outcome. One more episode!
