Entitled “Visiting Hours”, Slow Horses Episode 4 is really the one where the shit the fan for our misfit spies. As MI5’s Diana Tarvener’s false flag mission fails, she plans to use Lamb and his Slough House ‘slow horses’ as the scapegoats for her mistakes. It is clear as this episode unfolds, that Tarvener had a contingency plan by getting a spy from Slough House to set up the Sons of Albion plot to kidnap and behead a British Muslim student.

Thus, Slow Horses Episode 4, is focused on Tarvener’s machinations and Lamb’s attempts to escape from Tarvener’s diabolical clutches. These two plot narrative are at opposite ends of the quest between protagonists and antagonists and it is a brilliant cat and mouse game designed by the writers of this excellent spy TV series. Once more, the old hands viz. Gary Oldham (Lamb) and Kristin Scott Thomas (Tarvener) illuminate the episode with excellent performances.

But what about the hapless white supremecists themselves? This motley crew is the other side of the equation, aren’t they? The unpredictability they demonstrate keeps the audience guessing throughout and the fates of our protagonists, the ‘slow horses’, are still in the balance. Surely, if Lamb and co are able to rescue the kidnap victim, then Slough House would be in the clear. But it cannot be that straightforward, can it? We shall see. Highly recommended!
