Our mission at Power of Pop as far as the Singapore Music Scene is concerned is to promote pop-rock + rock ’n’ roll music in whatever way possible. So it is with our great pleasure to highlight two singer-songwriters who have embarked on a rock ’n’ roll journey despite the lack of support for that style of music within the scene itself.
Clouds & Shadows is basically Andy Philip Sng (self-described ‘boy-next-door’) who made a name for himself in open mics all across our island as an acoustic folk troubadour but on his debut 3-track EP, Andy reveals himself to us, an astute pop-rocker with a knack for potent melodicism. Sure, the songs on Time Capsule do border somewhat dangerously on the fringe of that dreaded genre ‘pop-punk’ but we are willing to turn the other cheek in this instance! “Love’s a Secret You Can’t Keep” is the pick of the bunch – a genuine ear worm of a chorus.
Time Capsule will be released on 26th August 2016, followed by a launch on 3rd September 2016 (at Barber Shop by Timbre) where Andy will be accompanied by a full band.
Shannon Luke is another promising young singer-songwriter who displays a keen songwriting edge on his EP Qualms of Being. There are elements of 80s post-punk (and even 90s S-ROCK!) in his work that are well crafted and lovingly developed throughout. His eclectic range of styles is a definite strength and there is a clear restless experimental bent in his music making. Ones to listen out for — the heartfelt “In Paradise Lost”, the instrumental “Farewell Eurasian House” and indie poppy “Brilliant Bay Sands”.
