British rock band Coldplay have sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling music artists. Here are some of Coldplay’s influences based on the music they have produced to date.
It’s fair to say that U2 have influenced most modern rock bands so their appearance on this list is a given.
A bit of a no-brainer as well. Singer Chris Martin has said many times over that there would be no Coldplay if there was no Radiohead.
An obvious influence as well. Martin reveres Buckley as well and has described a couple of Coldplay songs as attempts to evoke his hero.
ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN
A lesser well known inspiration for Martin and company perhaps but it should be noted that Martin has admitted that his friendship with Bunnymen singer Ian McCulloch inspired the writing and recording of A Rush of Blood to the Head.
This one might come as a surprise but minimalist composer Glass has had a hand – unwittingly – in the manner in which Martin plays the keyboards in certain Coldplay songs. Listen to the opening of Glassworks and spot the similarities.
