Rick and Morty Season 7 Ep 1 Analysis

Rick and Morty Season 7 Ep 1 is the first entry of the seventh season of a scifi fantasy animated sitcom about a mad scientist (Rick) who brings his grandson (Morty) on inter-dimensional, multi-universal adventures. The series is immensely popular and has seen many of its writers “graduate” to working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Premise
Entitled “How Poopy Got His Poop Back”, Rick and Morty Season 7 Ep 1 has Rick and cohorts stage an intervention for a depressed Mr. Poopybutthole but things get somewhat out of hand, predictably.

Good
One of the main draws of this entry is to witness the various guest stars who make an appearance as friends to ‘rescue’ Mr Poopybutthole, these include the usual suspects viz. Squanchy, Bird Person, Gearhead and a surprise in actor Hugh Jackman (voiced by Jackman himself!) Hilarity ensues as the intervention devolves into a hedonistic night out! We get to see the passage of time as Bird Person has a Bird Daughter and even Mr. Poopybutthole has children of his own. Oh and one more delightful guest – the Predator! Crazy!!

Bad
Now usually, the opening entry of a new season will feature a canonical narrative as Rick searches for the Rick variant that killed his wife. No such luck! As the story turns into a sequence of awfully repetitive party events, it becomes predictable and boring. Now, we realise that much of this series is episodic and standalone but surely there would be more narrative meat to this opening epidote, as usual. The diehard nerds must be sharpening their pencils even as we write.

Conclusion
In the final analysis, Rick and Morty Season 7 Ep 1 was rather meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Could this be due to the fact that co-creator Justin Roiland has been booted off the show? Hopefully not.
