Entitled “Bethic Twinstinct”, Rick and Morty Season 6 Ep 3 is probably one of the most bizarre episode of this series thus far. Which is really saying something. What is truly distinctive about this series is that the writers will follow the plot and characters to their logical narrative conclusions, however strange these might be. Which provides us with the basic premise of this instalment.

Some background needed to fully appreciate Rick and Morty Season 6 Ep 3. At the end of Season 3 – “The ABCs of Beth”, Beth had a crossroads moment where she was torn between fulfilling her own destiny by venturing into space like Rick or stay at home with her husband and children. Rick ‘resolved’ her dilemma by creating a clone of Beth so that she could literally do both. Though, in true Rick fashion, he didn’t know which one was the clone and which was the original.

In the episode, both Beths basically fall in love with each other! Technically, one might argue that since they are the same person, what they are doing is masturbation. Which, as we mentioned before, is the logical narrative conclusion to having two versions of a character. This concept cropped up in The Time Traveler’s Wife, when the main character had sex with his time travelling self! As uncomfortable as this idea might be, one cannot argue that it is illogical or breaks the story in any way…
Rick, Morty and Summer are awkward spectators to the scenario playing out with Jerry becoming involved in the twin Beths equation as well, ultimately. Brilliant as usual.

Rick and Morty Season 6 Ep 3 is once more primo Rick and Morty. That said, with yet another standalone episode, the rabid fanbase will be crying out for the next canon chapter sooner than later. Highly recommended!
