Rick and Morty Season 6 Ep 2

Rick and Morty Season 6 Ep 2 is the second episode of season 6 in this scifi fantasy action-adventure animated sitcom created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. The series follows the misadventures of cynical mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his good-hearted but fretful grandson Morty Smith, who split their time between domestic life and inter-dimensional adventures.

Entitled “Rick: A Mort Well Lived”, Rick and Morty Season 6 Ep 2 brings Rick, Morty and Summer back to Blips and Chitz, an interstellar video arcade. The arcade is attacked by a terrorist gang, the power goes out and Morty is split a billion times into non-player characters in the Roy video game. This is a game which allows a player to live a lifetime in the character Roy. Rick jacks into the game in order to get Morty – all the billions of him now – out and back into the real world. In the meantime, Summer has to deal with the terrorists herself, and Rick tells her to do a “Die Hard” – the Bruce Willis movie which Summer has never seen!

Thus, these are the two plots that run through Rick and Morty Season 6 Ep 2. Plot A is both a commentary on simulated reality as well as organised religion. In terms of the latter, as Rick (playing Roy) is trying to convince the various Morty simulacrum that their reality is not real and that there is a destiny beyond this world which they need to commit to. Scarily similar to religious cults especially in the messaging.

Plot B is a wonderful parody of Die Hard – highlighted by the brilliant voicing of the terrorist leader by Peter Dinklage, a satirical take on Alan Rickman’s Hans Gruber character. The storyline involves a meta perspective of Die Hard that takes the form of a philosophy, reduced to a book by the said leader. As usual, the folks behind Rick and Morty are able to combine silliness and seriousness together in one highly entertaining package.

Rick and Morty Season 6 Ep 2 is a standalone episode that really works, par for the course for this well written series. Expect more the same to come and the odd instalment exploring canon. Fine with us! Highly recommended!
