RICK AND MORTY SEASON 5 FINALE (REVIEW)

Rick and Morty Season 5 Finale Review

Rick and Morty Season 5 Finale are the final two episodes of season 5 in this scifi fantasy action-adventure animated comedy created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. The series follows the misadventures of cynical mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his good-hearted but fretful grandson Morty Smith, who split their time between domestic life and inter-dimensional adventures.

Rick and Morty Season 5 Finale is a two-parter consisting of episodes 9 and 10 accordingly. The Finale is very similar in tone to the excellent “Rickternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” viz. episode 8’s resolution of the Birdperson storyline. With “Forgetting Sarick Mortshall” (episode 9) and “Rickmurai Jack” (episode 10), the Finale takes a deeper dive into the Rick – Morty relationship and gives the fans what they have wanted all season – a return to the Citadel of Ricks and Evil Morty.

Rick and Morty Season 5 Finale

Episode 9 finds Rick replacing Morty with two crows , which sends Rick on an epic adventure with sentient crow creatures (what else) – while Morty gets entangled with another former sidekick of Rick named Nick (!), who leads Morty down a path that he is not comfortable with.

Inevitably, episode 10 reunites Rick and Morty and brings the duo back to the Citadel of Ricks and have to deal with Evil Morty, who is now the President. In a confrontation that is chock full of double crosses and twists and turns, Evil Morty unveils his endgame – an existence without Rick (!) – a state of affairs deemed necessary for the redemption and liberation of Morty.

Episode 10 also provides fans with a quick flashback sequence detailing Rick’s journey from the critical event of the death of his family and his adventures through the multiverse which ended up with his connecting with the Morty of the series. Ultimately of course, Rick and Morty Season 5 Finale concludes with a bit of a cliff-hanger and it would be interesting where the story goes in Season 6!

Definitely, the last three episodes of Season 5 demonstrate why Rick and Morty works best in serial format compared to the episodic narrative. Though the prime objective is satire, Rick and Morty soars when it deals with the characters and plots as reasonably scifi fantasy. Essential!
