Rick and Morty S05E05 is the fifth episode of season 5 in this scifi fantasy action-adventure animated comedy created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. The series follows the misadventures of cynical mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his good-hearted but fretful grandson Morty Smith, who split their time between domestic life and inter-dimensional adventures.
Entitled “Amortycan Grickfitti”, Rick and Morty S05E05 splits up the adults from the kids — Rick, Jerry and Beth get entangled with demons from a Hellraiser-inspired universe while Morty and Summer spend a night out in Rick’s sentient car with new schoolmate Bruce Chutback in a bid to impress the latter.

Rick and Morty S05E05 is relatively tame compared to the edgy hijinks of the previous episode. The Hellraiser-inspired bit is rather one-track as it devolves into the twisted irony of beings who take pleasure from pain, with the logic being that would it still be pain if it becomes pleasure? Basically messing with the Hellraiser premise and deriving silly laughs as a result. Gets old very fast though.
But comparatively, the kids’ high adventure comes off boring – with Rick’s sentient car turning into the protagonist which results in a half-assed attempt at scifi thrills and spills. A couple of transformer riffs are included but fails to generate any excitement or humour whatsoever.

Thus, sad to report that Rick and Morty S05E05 was a bit of a dud, running on the spot when it should be charging forward. Which is to say that season 5 seems to be running out of steam halfway through – an alarming development. Perhaps the better Rick and Morty writers have already been poached by Marvel Studios and we are now left with the second stringers? Disappointing to say the least.
