REEL TO REAL: COMING MOVIES FOR FEB 2015

Jupiter-Ascending

And January is almost over! Time to ponder the coming movies in February 2015.

5th February

STILL ALICE
Directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland
Starring Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart

Another movie about suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. Nothing frightens more than losing one’s memory permanently. Moore is nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for this one, so her performance is probably worth the price of admission. Get the hankies out though.

UNBROKEN
Directed by Angelina Jolie.
Starring Jack O’Connell, Domhnall Gleeson, Garrett Hedlund, Takamasa Ishihara

Yet another biopic – this time helmed by actress Jolie. The film revolves around the life of USA Olympian and athlete Louis “Louie” Zamperini, portrayed by Jack O’Connell. As the title suggests, this movie is going to be inspirational. Feel-good vibes to the max. Worth watching.

JUPITER ASCENDING
Directed by The Wachowskis
Starring Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne.

A space opera film written, produced, and directed by The Wachowskis. The film is centered on Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), a down-on-her-luck janitor (!), and Caine Wise (Channing Tatum), an interplanetary warrior who informs Jones that her destiny extends beyond Earth. The Matrix meets Stars Wars? Sure sounds that way. The Wachowskis did a good job on Cloud Atlas, so maybe they have gotten their mojo back? We shall see…

THE VOICES
Directed by Marjane Satrapi
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Gemma Artherton, Anna Kendrick.

You might be thinking – “Mm, Ryan Reynolds comedy, been there done that!” – and you’d be wrong. This is a film that promises to be twisted, bizarre and funny, even with Reynolds in the lead! Might be the sleeper of the month.

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE
Directed by Matthew Vaughn.
Starring Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, Taron Egerton, Michael Caine

A Mark Miller comic book adaptation with a plot device that comes across exactly like Wanted. Ho hum. Still, I have enough faith in Vaughn to give this film a must-see tag. Also Firth, Jackson and Caine in one movie? Bring it on!

19th February

Chinese New Year movies only.

26th February

FOCUS
Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa
Starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Rodrigo Santoro

Romantic-comedy with Will Smith playing a con-man who has to contend with an ex-lover (Robbie) who is now on the opposing side of the same scam. Slim pickings for dramatic tension on this one. Somewhat on the fence about this.
