Machete Kills (Directed by Robert Rodriguez)
The first Machete flick was fairly good fun as the unlikely anti-hero (Danny Trejo) cut a swath through one-dimensional bad guys with OTT cartoon violence, surrounded by buxomy babes and a host of well-known actors e.g. Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Steven Seagal etc. Inspired by 70s action exploitation movies, Machete did fair business at the box office.
Second time around – Machete Kills – the joke isn’t funny anymore, even with Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen (billed as Carlos Estevez – his real name), Cuba Gooding Jr, Lady Gaga, Sofia Vergara and Antonio Banderas on board for the ride. This time around, the strong James Bond satirical theme does not work as well as the current affairs (immigration) thread did, previously. Whilst the cheesy, campy approach worked before, this time it’s grating – with the low rent art direction actually painful to the eye after prolonged exposure. Worse still, the movie ends with a cliffhanger with the promise of another sequel – Machete Kills Again.. in Space – please God, no…
Skip this and watch Gravity. Again.
