Entitled “The Algorithms of Control”, Rabbit Hole Ep 3 is an expository chapter that explains exactly what the series plot and character motivations are all about. Told in a sequence of various flashbacks and conversations within Weir’s safe house, the information can be overwhelming and it is easy to lose interest if focus and attention is not paid by a viewer. And… considering the grand scope of the overall narrative quest, a bit of a challenge for the good ol’ suspension of disbelief.
Let us break down the background provided in Rabbit Hole Ep 3 and present it chronologically. After Dr. Wilson’s presumed suicide, Weir’s teenage years were aimless and debilitating till he met Valence in boarding school. That relationship formed the basis of a successful business partnership before Dr. Wilson returned from the dead to propose a complex spy mission to take down Crowley, the villain of the piece in the style of the Koch brothers or George Soros.
Which then brings us to the events of the first two episodes and the dilemma that Weir is in, due to Crowley’s retaliation against Weir (framed for murder) and Valence (dead by suicide). This episode’s dramatic need is simply Weir’s attempts at breaking into Valence’s server and downloading data. That’s it. Incredibly boring but a platform for the exposition. Not quite sure it works though. Hopefully things pick up with the next instalment!
