PoP RECOMMENDS | THE NEW ROCK N ROLL : LO TOM – S/T

Sometimes even the finest musicians need to step back and reinvent themselves in new ways in order for their music to grow. So it is with alt-rock ‘supergroup’ Lo Tom.

Made up of David Bazan (Pedro the Lion), Trey Many (Velour 100, Starflyer 59), TW Walsh (Pedro the Lion, The Soft Drugs), and Jason Martin (Starflyer 59), Lo Tom have nothing much to prove except perhaps that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

The music is testament to the success of this team-up. The songs are fresh, incisive, tuneful and they rock!

“Overboard” is a relentless rocker with melancholy overtones,  “Bad Luck Charm” is a meat-and-potatoes guitar riff taken to its logical conclusion and “Find the Shrine” is straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll with lyrics that belies the track’s visceral simplicity.

A new lease of life? Certainly seems like it. It’s especially good to see David Bazan tapping into a prolific and eclectic vein this year considering he only just released a synthpop solo album in March!

Don’t miss this amongst the glut of great music in 2017!
