Not the “Kurt and Courtney” of the 90s but certainly this collaborative album between Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile is highly evocative of that decade’s alt-rock highs.
To be specific, there’s quite a bit of familiarity with Lotta Sea Live, if one recalls what journos derisively termed “slacker rock” back in the day.
Thus, songs like “Over Everything”, “Fear is like a Forest” and “On Script” are indeed reminiscent of bands like Dinosaur Jr., Pavement, Silver Jews, Sebadoh, Lemonheads etc in their more looser, placid moments.
If there’s a complaint here, it might be that the music is simply too laidback and never quite quickens the pulse at any moment.
That said, it’s an appropriate chill-out album for the 90s alt-rock set.
… still there’s more …
