Seattle new wave revivalists Spirit Award are back with a new album, Muted Crowd.
The trio’s music faithfully evokes the British music scene of the 80s when bands like Simple Minds, Psychedelic Furs, Japan, Ultravox et al, took the influences of Bowie, Roxy Music and seminal Krautwork and worked into a distinctive arty pop-rock style.
Back then, these British bands unabashedly considered themselves pop groups and there is a sense about Spirit Award that lends itself to this commitment.
Thus songs like “Witching Hour”, “Dark Night of the Soul” and “Wasting Time” bridge the divide between artistic concerns and new wave pop appeal brilliantly.
Exceptional songwriting coupled with an authentic understanding of the new wave ‘genre’ render Muted Crowd an essential album for the PoP faithful indeed!
