Fly I Will Because I Can is the third album from My Favourite Things, founded in Brooklyn by Dorothea Tachler (formerly of Igloo, The Swirlies, Alles Wie Gross).
While the press release makes comparisons to Beach House and Broadcast and describe the band’s music as dreampop and shoegaze, we perceive a more folky chamber pop vibe and a sophistication closer to the likes of The High Llamas and the Heavy Blinkers.
The music is melodically pleasing and the arrangements are texturally gorgeous with a melancholy vibe that is impossible to shake. Which makes this an essential item for all fans of Brian Wilson’s mid-60s excursions into orchestral pop music – not to mention erudite songwriters from that era like Burt Bacharach and Jimmy Webb.
Whereas songs like “Goodbye Again”, “Some Things Stay the Same (Stay A Little While)” and “Nobody Knows” fit this mould to a ‘t’, retro-pop gems like “Everything Changes” and “Growing Pains” take familiar chord patterns and imbue them all with new sensibilities.
Much to discover on this wondrous album that deserve closer inspection for sophisti-pop lovers!
