The PoP faithful would be by now, familiar with our love and respect for one-man-band Bittersweet Machines (a.k.a. Matt Mocharnuk) and his ongoing obsession with channelling 80s post-punk into modern rock vignettes.
Over the years Matt has laboured – somewhat under the radar – to produce some of the finest retro-pop music we have had the privilege to savour.
His new EP – Talking to Ghosts – is no exception, maintaining the high standards that he has set for himself.
The opening “Lights Are Fading Down” recalls the synth + guitar dynamism of Ultravox, “Ordinary Day” is a gorgeous midtempo ballad, the title track is a melancholy study of loneliness – “maybe all I need tonight is someone to be here by my side” whilst “Monarch” is a heartfelt rumination on loss and a tribute to a loved one.
These four songs showcase not only Matt’s deft use of arrangements and instrumentation to convey a specific mood but also Matt’s vocal ability, which provides the means to deliver a emotional punch.
… still there’s more …
