Peacemaker S01E08 Review

Peacemaker S01E08 is the season one finale of an American superhero comedy drama streaming television series created by James Gunn for the streaming service HBO Max, based on the DC Comics character Peacemaker. It is the first DC Extended Universe (DCEU) television series, a spin-off from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad.

Peacemaker S01E08 Review

Entitled “It’s Cow or Never”, Peacemaker S01E08 conclusively resolves the alien butterfly storyline as Peacemaker and team take out the alien’s only source of sustenance. Superficially, this season one finale is straightforward – Peacemaker and the team have to race against time to destroy the alien ‘cow’ before they can teleported it to another location. Pure and simple.

Peacemaker S01E08 Review

But in true James Gunn fashion, Peacemaker S01E08 manages to wring out silly action sequences, witty dialogue and heartfelt human moments into this bizarre scenario. And it’s funny throughout! Gunn has certainly re-invented the superhero genre several times over and there’s no argument that this Peacemaker series has had more quality than any of the Marvel Studios streaming TV series so far.

Peacemaker S01E08 Review

By the end of the episode, you will be surprised by how emotionally resonant the whole experience turned out to be as Peacemaker makes peace (sorry) with his team-mates and there is genuine connection amongst them all. This very much echoes what Gunn achieved with another motley crew of comic book characters viz. the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Peacemaker S01E08 Review

Not only that but Gunn is able to throw honest to goodness moral ambiguity which casts light on the aliens’ ultimate grand plan and shade at the human race. But Peacemaker’s simple truth of putting his friends first certainly felt real and perhaps reflective of what’s going on in society right now. At the end of the day, it’s protecting the people we care for, and not for some illusory concept.

Peacemaker S01E08 may signal the close of this amazing first season but news of a second season would have cheered on all James Gunn’s fans. Highly recommended!

Now streaming on HBO Max.
