Peacemaker S01E05 is the fifth episode of an American superhero comedy drama streaming television series created by James Gunn for the streaming service HBO Max, based on the DC Comics character Peacemaker. It is the first DC Extended Universe (DCEU) television series, a spin-off from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad.

Entitled “Monkey Dory”, Peacemaker S01E05 demonstrates the character team bonding that writer-creator James Gunn is so good at, as Peacemaker and the team chase down a factory producing the food consumed by the alien Butterflies. At its best, Peacemaker sequences come close to the best of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and that is really saying something!

Apart from that, nothing really significant occurs in Peacemaker S01E05 to move the plot forward too much. We do not acquire any more information concerning the alien Butterflies but what we are treated to is a battle royale between our team and the aliens which ends in a bang and some monkey business, in a matter of speaking! As always, the banter is the main attraction of the series as Gunn’s dialoguing truly shines. Which means that the character development works quite well throughout.

That all aside, the peripheral storytelling is pure setup, presumably to be paid off in remaining episodes. The endings of this episode and the previous one, certainly require serious resolution in the next episode, one way or another. One cannot help but wonder how a story about alien Butterflies in the DCEU is going to be resolved without the intervention of any meta humans (Peacemaker has no powers , of course).

With the series running out of episodes, Peacemaker S01E05 was good fun without progressing the plot line and hopefully that will be rectified in the final 3 episodes of this series. Still recommended viewing.
