Entitled “Asylum”, Moon Knight Episode 5 intrigues and mystifies as the series continues the journey of Marc and Steven after ‘they’ are shot by Harrow in the previous episode. At the end of that instalment, Marc and Steven encounter Taweret, the Egyptian Hippopotamus goddess! Continuing from that moment, we are perhaps introduced to a third persona at the beginning of the episode – with the nose injury (?) which disappears subsequently.

Tawaret actually confirms that Marc and Steven are in the afterlife and the asylum is a manifestation of ‘their’ memories – as per Egyptian myth – ‘their’ hearts are to be weighed against a feather to determine if they can ascend to the Field of Reeds or descend to the Underworld. But unfortunately, Marc and Steven are ‘unbalanced’ and thus would be dragged into the underworld by the souls of the men Marc had killed in his life.
Now, in order to be balanced by the end of Moon Knight Episode 5, Marc must reveal to Steven his deepest darkest secrets – that he had created the Steven Grant persona to deal with the traumatic abuse he suffered at the hands of his mother, who had blamed him for the death of his younger brother. That resolution leads to a breakthrough that somehow – this being a Marvel story – requires expression by way of an action sequence. Steven is turned to stone in the Underworld, the scales balance and Marc ascends to the Field of Reeds. What next?
Moon Knight Episode 5 is yet another strong episode with emotional resonance and thrilling switch and bait with Marc’s DID personas – perfectly setting up the series finale next week! Highly recommended!!
