MOON KNIGHT EPISODE 4 (ANALYSIS)

Moon Knight Episode 4 is the fourth instalment of a six-part American superhero television miniseries created by Jeremy Slater for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Moon Knight is ostensibly a superhero that with psychological horror elements, as the character is suffering from dissociative identity disorder (DID). There is also a supernatural aspect to Moon Knight as he is the avatar of the Egyptian god Khonshu.

Entitled “The Tomb”, Moon Knight Episode 4 is perhaps the most challenging instalment thus far in this miniseries as it delves deeper into the Egyptian mythology that much of its narrative is based on. As seen in the last episode, Khonshu has been imprisoned by the Ennead and thus Mark Spector/Steven Grant are bereft of superpowers as ‘they’ are accompanied by Layla to get to Ammit before Harrow and his cult can revive the goddess.

Since the locale moved to Cairo, the miniseries has taken on the influence of Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Mummy movies, with Egyptian mythology driving the narrative strongly. So much of the early obstacles faced by Layla and Steven (who is in control now) involve the Heka priests entombed with Amity’s final avatar – a Pharaoh later revealed to be none other than Alexander the Great! After defeating the undead priest, Layla has an encounter with Harrow, who once more hints that Marc knows more about the death of Layla’s father than he lets on.

This encounter leads to Layla confronting Marc even as Steven discovers the ushabti of Ammit – the statute that imprisons her – while Harrow and his cult catches up with the couple. What happens next is mystifying as Marc is shot by Harrow and falls into the waters in the tomb before waking up in an mental asylum, where all the key characters (Layla, Steven) are either inmates or doctors (Harrow). Yes Marc and Steven appear as separate persons (!) and at the end of the episode encounter the Hippo goddess Tawaret!

What does this all mean? Is this the afterlife? Is the asylum merely the psychic world i.e. the mind of Marc/Steven? Guess we will find out next week!
