Mare of Easttown S01E03 is the 3rd episode of an American crime drama miniseries created by Brad Ingelsby and directed by Craig Zobel. The miniseries stars Kate Winslet (as main character Detective Mare Sheehan) and is set in the fictional township of Easttown.
Entitled “Enter Number Two”, Mare of Easttown S01E03 develops complications for Mare’s investigation into Erin’s murder, even as Detective Colin Zabel (Evan Peters) tries his hardest to get on Mare’s good side – no mean feat – and discovers that this small township of Easttown is too closely connected for comfort.

Mare of Easttown S01E03 continues to peel the skin off this particular onion, layer by layer, as we discover more about Mare’s complex background. The script does a good job in dropping enough breadcrumbs to keep the audience guessing though at this point, the mystery of Erin’s death can be exasperating, as it should be.
The real issue is still Mare’s characterisation – the episode doubles and even triples down on the series protagonist’s unlikable personality. Mare seems to be at war with the world even those who love and care for her. Which indicates that she is still in depression and in denial over her son’s suicide.

Arguably, at least Mare of Easttown S01E03 gives us cause to cut Mare some slack as to her dreadful behaviour and there is even a ray of hope with regards her relationship with Zabel before pulling the rug from under us at the very end.
Yes, the shocking conclusion of the episode that nobody quite saw coming as it seems to seriously handicap the rest of the series. Apart from casting doubt about any possibility of the audience identifying with such an unsympathetic character, the consequences of Mare’s action will make it that much more difficult for her to resolve the key mystery of the miniseries. Perhaps that is the idea. We shall see.
